I also told them that most, if not all, people reading the HH series from a 40K background would already know most of the stuff that Visions of Heresy reveals in terms of what happens in the HH, so if they did read spoilers, they're not the end of the world. I ended up having to lend them the Visions of Heresy book and just telling them to read as much or as little as they'd like (depending on how much they cared about spoilers). It is, simply, too much for most to take onboard. I've gotten a few friends into the Horus Heresy recently but, having not come from a 40k background, they really really struggled.
